Anorexia Tips To Help In A Difficult Situation

What Is Anorexia? It's in many ways a strange disease, but there are a few anorexia tips that can bring help to a sufferer. Anorexia is not caused by a virus, and is not the result of an infection. It is probably not caused by a genetic defect, although some recent studies indicate that genetics might play a role. Some studies have indicated that a person with parents who have, or have had the disease, has a significantly higher chance of contracting it. It hasn't been ruled out however that environment may still be the primary factor in such cases. A perfectly healthy person can become anorexic, and if not treated, could even die from it. What makes the whole issue very difficult is that, while the symptoms of anorexia are physical, the disease itself is largely in the patient's head, and it is a situation in which the patient is just not feeling good about himself or herself.

Anorexia is a strange disease, and putting together a list of anorexia tips isn't necessarily going to outline the path for a cure, but it is a start. A person who suffers from anorexia usually shows symptoms, at least eventually, clearly pointing to the disease. The sufferer is usually aware they have the disease, though they may be in denial. Even if not in denial, and they have knowledge of what a course of treatment would involve, they are reluctant to undergo such treatment, or simply refuse to undergo it. It's a bit like a sick economy. You have a healthy economy, something happens that doesn't seem just right, fear sets in, and things start going downhill. Even then, there is denial and often a reluctance, out of fear, to take steps necessary to correct the situation.

Anorexia is like that. A person feels that something is not quite right with their body, and therefore not quite right with themselves. In this case it's a worry of being overweight, hence unattractive. The individual begins to eat less to lose weight. No matter what, the fear or feeling of being overweight, or becoming overweight does not go away but stays on, and even increases. The situation of eating less eventually becomes one of starving oneself, and the sufferer actually begins to dislike and even abhor even the thought of food. The sufferer is not mentally unstable, simply gripped by an unrealistic fear of either being overweight, gaining weight, or becoming fat. Anorexic tips, to be of any help, really have suggest an action that will address this fear, and convince the patient that it is an unrealistic fear. This is usually much easier said than done.

Who Suffers From Anorexia?

Anorexia is not specifically a disease affecting women only. Men can suffer from it as well, though the overwhelming number of anorexia sufferers are women, and mostly teens and younger women. One reason for this is a strong desire on the part of women to appear attractive, and in our society, being attractive usually means being slender, or at least not fat. When Rubens was busy painting some of his masterpieces it is obvious that a little plumpness in women was considered attractive. One can only wonder if anorexia was a problem in those times. All we know is that it is a problem today. One only has to look at statistics which indicate that around 1% of adolescent girls in the United States are affected by the disease. Although 1% does not seem large, it is, from a medical perspective, an epidemic. Further more, a tenth of these women will probably not succeed in overcoming anorexia. Some will die; others will suffer from malnutrition, bringing on chronic health problems that can affect them for life. In your toolbox of anorexic tips, statistics like these can be quoted, hoping to fight fear with fear. This may or may not work, but if it gives the sufferer a wake-up call it can certainly help to let them know that they may be on a slippery slope. (continued...)
